Terrific “Mini” Laptop Computer Rating:4 out of 5 stars The Acer AO532h is a wonderful little “mini” computer. It is small enough and light enough that I keep it in my book bag all day. Internet access is easy, so when I stop for coffee, I can check my e-mail and scan the headlines. It takes a couple of weeks to get used to the size and feel of the keyboard, but now my typing speed is probably about 95% of that on a full-size keyboard.
With a fast broadband connection, you can watch videos on Hulu, and most run smoothly if you give the memory buffer time to fill. The sound quality, through good earbuds, is excellent, so you can listen to music on Pandora or put some of your favorite music on the hard drive.
BUT, be aware that the biggest difference between the various versions of the AO532h is battery capacity. Look for a version that has a 5800 mAh battery so that you can go eight to ten hours without needed a recharge. The versions with smaller batteries are a couple of ounces lighter, but battery life is reduced to the six hour to eight hour range.
It is a waste of money to upgrade this computer to 2 gigs of memory. Using the Windows Task Manager, I can monitor memory use. When using the internet, with many tabs open, memory use does not get higher than 600 megs or 700 megs. Even when watching a video on Hulu, or burning a DVD with a USB powered DVD burner, memory use does not get above 900 megs. Some video intensive tasks will cause the CPU, with its built-in video chip, to reach 100% of capacity…but adding more memory does not lighten the load on the CPU.
The battery drains slightly whether the computer is turned off, or in the “sleep” mode. Two hours in the “sleep” mode reduces battery capacity by less than 5%. So, much of the day, I keep the computer in the sleep mode, rather than turn it off. If I am using “OpenOffice” to draft a memo, I can open the computer, tap on the space bar, and resume work in just ten seconds or so…much faster than rebooting the computer and reloading “OpenOffice”.
Don’t forget that ANY mini-computer is a fragile device. I carry mine in a thickly padded case inside of my padded book bag. An under three pound computer needs to be handled with care.
very good Rating:4 out of 5 stars first I love this thing and what it signifies for computing.
I would love to have power and portability but it is not affordable or stable, the combo provided in this package however is pretty stable and ultra portable.
only problem is intel always hot and no real power… ok I take it back it would run win xp almost half as good as a AMD 64 3600.
so I suppose they could call it performance 8-9 years ago also atom is very limited architecture wise, works well with simple 32bit apps.
it is awful at emulation not even capable of 486 emu in win7 version.
I disagree with most peoples gripe the memory is not the problem, I don’t even see it as a problem.
the graphics is another intel joke showing they have no idea what they are doing, if they have a deal with nvidea they better show it.
ok to summarize great for what it is supposed to do and not very good at anything beyond photo editing or watching dvds with added hardware.
“Murphy” is my travel buddy! Rating:5 out of 5 stars I have had my little Acer netbook for 2 months as of today. I haven’t had a single problem with it, as a matter of fact, I LOVE it.
First off, it is truly transportable not transluggable like most regular laptops. It only weighs a couple of pounds and doesn’t cut off the circulation in my arm when in a shoulder bag. Secondly, its small size makes it easy to slip into a tote bag or large purse.
Aesthetically, the case is lovely, going from black by the hinge to a lovely metallic blue at the top.
Inside, the keyboard is a bit smaller than a standard one, but it only took me a few minutes to adjust too. They keys and keyboard are also very solid and are nice to type on. The screen is very bright and easy to see in almost all lighting conditions except for direct sunlight on it. The colors are vivid and very sharp, which makes the small screen much easier to read. The speakers are also quite clear and loud for a such a little computer, I remain impressed 2 months on. The touchpad is very responsive and I love the 2 finger gestures that you can use with it. It is also bumpy so you know when you are using it.
This netbook boots up nice and fast compared to my 3 year old laptop. I can do everything that I need to do on it, check e-mail, surf the net, minor word processing, checking games rules for the LARP game I run, etc. I also have used it for creating digital scrapbooks with my favorite program. I have also used it to play exercise videos via the external dvd drive I purchased with it.
The 160 gb hard drive holds tons of stuff from my perspective (my regular laptop only has a 60 gb hd).
I also have enjoyed Windows 7, even though it was the starter version. There are some limitations to the starter version, but I found good workarounds on the net so I didn’t have to buy the upgrade. My backgrounds change and I can play videos, which were the main things that I wanted to do that were not part of Windows 7.
In closing, I love my netbook so much that I bought one for my husband for his father’s day/birthday present.
Excellent for Ubuntu Netbook Remix Rating:5 out of 5 stars Received netbook on shipment promised date. Works great. Installed 2GB of Crucial memory also ordered at the same time. I uninstalled the trial software apps with windows 7. Then backed up the whole disk onto an image file (usb external drive). Then installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix so it is a dual boot with windows 7. The home directory was setup as a designated encrypted partition.
Notebook has a nice display, keyboard has a good feel, and I like the touchpad and horizontal contact bar for the mouse buttons. Have not had a chance to check out the battery life yet, but feel it will be in the 6-7 hour length.
Acer Netbook Rating:5 out of 5 stars Bought this small computer for overseas travel and, at least in the short run, it has proven to be extremely reliable, while at the same time its compact size is exactly what was required. Netbooks are a great idea, and this Acer, with its great battery life, doesn’t disappoint.
Second Aspire One I own. Much better value than an Ipad. Rating:5 out of 5 stars I found my new Aspire one 532h to be much more responsive than my older n270. My previous Aspire One bit the dust when my girl friend stepped on it cracking the screen. It also feels more solid with an improved keyboard, louder sound volume from the internal speakers and a snappy windows 7. I thought of purchasing the Ipad but I like having a separate keyboard and feel my needs for better computing flexibility and interface are addressed with a netbook. My Itouch is great for quick email and weather. So all in all I am very happy with my Acer One and you probably will be too.
It’s okay but I need something bigger Rating:3 out of 5 stars This is my first laptop/notebook computer and I bought it for primarily for portability so I could use for making time lapse videos while mobile. I’m using an external web cam (Logitech Pro 9000) which seems to be compatible with this computer. In retrospect I would have been happier if I’d gotten a faster computer with a larger screen. The small screen is okay but straining to see the tiny icons and tiny keys is really annoying. I finally gave up trying to get used to the touch screen and bought a mouse. The processor is incredibly slow and my overall impression of this computer is that it’s just too toy-like to be of much use to me.
Cost effective powerhouse Rating:4 out of 5 stars I would have given 5 stars if I had the 2g ram running. As far as using it it’s used for what I use it for; simply updating my email accnts and syncing my phone with outlook.
I use this for business mostly, utilizing office. This is a powerhouse as a utility! I love it! It is a smooth operation with very little if any hesitance running programs. I plug in my smartphone and sync on the fly, wireless setup is a breeze and buttons on the key pad aren’t too bad. I have small hands so I naturally fit well with this little guy!
The sleep feature is great. the hibernate feature is awesome, and startup time is very acceptable at approx. 39 sec! Battery life is a solid 8hrs. For this thing to do all that on a atom processor, I will never complain.
Gaming- no comment; don’t play.
Graphic artistry/complex resource programs- Don’t. I run a mediocre video editing software and it almost doesn’t like that although, it functions flawlessly.
I was really happy with this purchase and I recommend it to anyone that is in sales or office work that is always on the run.
Excellent for the price, except for technical support! Rating:4 out of 5 stars This is a marvelous little machine to take on the road: fast, small, light and long lasting. To get the most out of it, follow the advices posted here, i.e. upgrade the RAM to 2 GB (Use Crucial web site to get the correct RAM module number (it must be the PC6400 800 MHz one, otherwise it might not work). Mine came with Windows 7 starter, which you might want to upgrade to a higher version. I upgraded mine to Windows 7 Enterprise (from work) which is similar to Windows 7 Ultimate. You might want to update the BIOS as well.
I removed most software it came with since they are bloatware. Load my own software on it, and it handles those with no problem.
The only issue (well, make that two) I had with it is the wireless connection. First issue: mine only connects to to open, non-secure networks; as soon as I try to connect it to my home network, which is not-broadcast, WPA2 Personal-AES, 802.11n-only network, it failed immediately. Updating to the latest Wireless adapter driver from Acer web site (version 8.0.0.259) did not help. Took me 2 days to locate a better driver from the manufacturer, installed it and it fixed the problem right away. So if you have this problem, and yours come with the Atheros AR5B95 -based chipset, look for driver version 8.0.0.279.
Which brings me to the second complaint: customer service. Those people are a bunch of moronic idiots who jobs are to compare your complaints with a set of standard samples, then copy and paste scripts into their replies. Why? In my E-mail, I stated “…has updated the driver to the latest 8.0.0.259 from Acer Support Web site…” and I got this answer (within 15 minutes):
“You may follow the link and update the wireless driver to resolve the issue.
[...]
just because my subject line was “Wireless: Can’t connect”!!! And there is no way I can escalate my issue to the next level.
The next E-mail reply from them is even more idiotic (“Please run Windows in Safe mode and try your wireless connection”!!!) and nothing after that. If you are someone who relies on manufacturer support, you might consider choosing something else. I also just happen to live 10 minutes drive from their US headquarter, so at least I can drop by and complain to them (which was my plan if I could not get the wireless to work).
So: The netbook is 5 stars, but the tech support is -5 stars.
A few glitches, but a good buy Rating:4 out of 5 stars I had a Dell netbook, but made the mistake of convincing my husband he would like it for travel. Now I can’t get it back so I had to buy another one. I like this machine because it has a much better touch pad than our Dell netbook. It also does not have some of the keyboard idiosyncracies I found with my Dell.
The down side of this unit is that the USB ports don’t seem to be quite right. I can make them work, but you have to work a little bit to plug/unplug a USB cable. It’s nothing that stops me from using it, just a little annoying.
The thing that convinced me to buy this Acer instead of another Dell was that it is preloaded with Windows 7. Unfortunately, I did not realize before purchasing that it is only the starter edition of Windows 7, so you don’t get all the features. If I want to pay to upgrade, I can, but that seems a little ridiculous. I paid for an operating system, not a PARTIAL operating system.
Be forewarned that if you are loading a prior version of Outlook onto Windows7, there is a known issue with email passwords. No fix as of yet.
Overall, I recommend this machine, as the only real problems I’ve had are related to software, not the netbook.
Travels well Rating:5 out of 5 stars I bought this netbook for a trip across the country. It travels well, is lightweight, has a good screen resolution, and surfs the internet quickly. The USB ports are great for accessories and for importing or exporting files. Love the red cover!
Acer Netbook Rating:5 out of 5 stars I love my Acer netbook. It is exactly what I wanted and met all my expectations. I added memory without any glitches and I am not tech savy. I have found no negatives and look forward to taking it with me to Europe this summer.
Failed since the first boot… Rating:3 out of 5 stars When I first turned on this netbook, I got a black screen and the boot process never finished. I tried several times and got 2 satisfactory, but sloooooow, start ups only. I took it to an authorised tech support in Colombia and they found out that the bios was outdated and the mainboard was faulty.
Aside of that, the systems is preloaded with too much useless stuff. If a netbook is intended to be a light PC, why does Acer insist on fill Win7 Starter with an endless list of accessories and proprietary applications. These are not even to be used on the net!
My best choice was to format everything and install a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition. Priceless decision!
Acer 10.1″ Computer Rating:5 out of 5 stars I bought this computer back in Feb 2010 and it has worked over and above my expectations. I got it so I could take it with me on trips and not have to bogged down with a larger Laptop. It does everything I want to and connections to the internet are flawless. I would say to anyone who is looking to get something a little more smaller than a larger unit get this one and you wont be disappointed.. I upgraded to the full version of windows 7 Home Premium without a problem.. I also added the 2gigs of memory it recognized it without so much as a hiccup..
