Terrific “Mini” Laptop Computer
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The Acer AO532h is a wonderful little “mini” computer. It is small enough and light enough that I keep it in my book bag all day. Internet access is easy, so when I stop for coffee, I can check my e-mail and scan the headlines. It takes a couple of weeks to get used to the size and feel of the keyboard, but now my typing speed is probably about 95% of that on a full-size keyboard.
With a fast broadband connection, you can watch videos on Hulu, and most run smoothly if you give the memory buffer time to fill. The sound quality, through good earbuds, is excellent, so you can listen to music on Pandora or put some of your favorite music on the hard drive.
BUT, be aware that the biggest difference between the various versions of the AO532h is battery capacity. Look for a version that has a 5800 mAh battery so that you can go eight to ten hours without needed a recharge. The versions with smaller batteries are a couple of ounces lighter, but battery life is reduced to the six hour to eight hour range.
It is a waste of money to upgrade this computer to 2 gigs of memory. Using the Windows Task Manager, I can monitor memory use. When using the internet, with many tabs open, memory use does not get higher than 600 megs or 700 megs. Even when watching a video on Hulu, or burning a DVD with a USB powered DVD burner, memory use does not get above 900 megs. Some video intensive tasks will cause the CPU, with its built-in video chip, to reach 100% of capacity…but adding more memory does not lighten the load on the CPU.
The battery drains slightly whether the computer is turned off, or in the “sleep” mode. Two hours in the “sleep” mode reduces battery capacity by less than 5%. So, much of the day, I keep the computer in the sleep mode, rather than turn it off. If I am using “OpenOffice” to draft a memo, I can open the computer, tap on the space bar, and resume work in just ten seconds or so…much faster than rebooting the computer and reloading “OpenOffice”.
Don’t forget that ANY mini-computer is a fragile device. I carry mine in a thickly padded case inside of my padded book bag. An under three pound computer needs to be handled with care.
very good

first I love this thing and what it signifies for computing.
I would love to have power and portability but it is not affordable or stable, the combo provided in this package however is pretty stable and ultra portable.
only problem is intel always hot and no real power… ok I take it back it would run win xp almost half as good as a AMD 64 3600.
so I suppose they could call it performance 8-9 years ago also atom is very limited architecture wise, works well with simple 32bit apps.
it is awful at emulation not even capable of 486 emu in win7 version.
I disagree with most peoples gripe the memory is not the problem, I don’t even see it as a problem.
the graphics is another intel joke showing they have no idea what they are doing, if they have a deal with nvidea they better show it.
ok to summarize great for what it is supposed to do and not very good at anything beyond photo editing or watching dvds with added hardware.

I have had my little Acer netbook for 2 months as of today. I haven’t had a single problem with it, as a matter of fact, I LOVE it.
First off, it is truly transportable not transluggable like most regular laptops. It only weighs a couple of pounds and doesn’t cut off the circulation in my arm when in a shoulder bag. Secondly, its small size makes it easy to slip into a tote bag or large purse.
Aesthetically, the case is lovely, going from black by the hinge to a lovely metallic blue at the top.
Inside, the keyboard is a bit smaller than a standard one, but it only took me a few minutes to adjust too. They keys and keyboard are also very solid and are nice to type on. The screen is very bright and easy to see in almost all lighting conditions except for direct sunlight on it. The colors are vivid and very sharp, which makes the small screen much easier to read. The speakers are also quite clear and loud for a such a little computer, I remain impressed 2 months on. The touchpad is very responsive and I love the 2 finger gestures that you can use with it. It is also bumpy so you know when you are using it.
This netbook boots up nice and fast compared to my 3 year old laptop. I can do everything that I need to do on it, check e-mail, surf the net, minor word processing, checking games rules for the LARP game I run, etc. I also have used it for creating digital scrapbooks with my favorite program. I have also used it to play exercise videos via the external dvd drive I purchased with it.
The 160 gb hard drive holds tons of stuff from my perspective (my regular laptop only has a 60 gb hd).
I also have enjoyed Windows 7, even though it was the starter version. There are some limitations to the starter version, but I found good workarounds on the net so I didn’t have to buy the upgrade. My backgrounds change and I can play videos, which were the main things that I wanted to do that were not part of Windows 7.
In closing, I love my netbook so much that I bought one for my husband for his father’s day/birthday present.
