hard drive, fan, AND motherboard went within 7 months! Rating:1 out of 5 stars This is the worst computer I have ever owned. The hard drive, fan, AND motherboard went within 7 months of my purchasing it. I sent it back to Acer (at my expense) they “fixed it” and sent it back several weeks later. It worked for literally 15 minutes and then crashed again- wouldn’t even turn on. It was finally fixed after the second trip back to Acer- but now for some reason the touchpad- which was always really bad- is even worse than ever. It skips, sticks, won’t scroll properly, and makes the text suddenly larger or smaller for no reason. If the cursor is accidentally moved too slowly over an add or link it automatically goes there without even clicking the touchpad! Do not buy this computer- the only thing good about it is it’s small portable size. It is obviously cheap for a very good reason. Save yourself a giant headache and spend a little more money to get a better computer.
just a keyboard issue Rating:3 out of 5 stars i bought mine in late november thingd were great till i got home one nite turn it on ,started writing look up the screen was blank ,keyboard ,tried to call acer ,on hold for at least 1.30 min.finnaly got the authoirty to send it in ,( they had me try everything ) i told them the keyboard is brokin i cant type i told them ,still waitin for a word back from them
Lousy customer service for a short on the motherboard Rating:1 out of 5 stars This is a fun little netbook. It worked directly out of the box and continues to be fine. It didn’t take long to notice, though, that it has a power drain, though. After completely charging the battery, the battery discharges about 20% per day, but only when attached to the netbook. (The battery holds its charge just fine when detached from the netbook.) The first time I shipped it to customer service, they updated the BIOS, replaced the battery, and sent it back to me after it passed their standard diagnostics. Nevertheless, the problem persisted. They have no test for power drains on the motherboard, and, even though I requested it, didn’t bother to investigate. Googling reveals this to be a fairly common problem with this netbook. The second time I sent it in I argued for an hour with customer service—with eventual success—to get the motherboard replaced. Upon sending it back to me a second time, they said they replaced the motherboard, but the wireless MAC address remains the same and the problem still hadn’t been resolved. It is unclear to me whether in fact they did replace the motherboard. (It still passes the standard diagnostics.)
Needless to say, customer service is horribly unresponsive. I cannot use this netbook without having it plugged in. There is nothing I can do about it, and that’s what I’m stuck with.
Great! Rating:5 out of 5 stars After a couple first generation EEE PCs that soon showed how cheap they really are, and an Acer a150 (8.9″ model) that died after 4 months, I found myself netbook shopping once again. I was NOT going to get another acer. But after looking at all of them, trying them out whenever possible, the acers were the only ones I was compatible with. That 8.9″ acer was a great little computer until it didn’t turn on one day. I could have sent it back for repair, but got lazy and let the warranty run out. I bought this particular model because it had XP. I’m sure Windows 7 is lovely, but I really like XP.
This computer has been awesome! So light, and very thin. The bigger (than the 8.9″) screen makes a huge difference, I didn’t realize it would. I often forget that I am using a netbook. I don’t see why people keep saying netbooks are slow and underpowered. I have no problems, programs open quickly, music is smooth, internet is fast (especially after I switched from IE to google chrome). Although, streamed videos are slightly choppy at times, but I can deal with that, I don’t stream much anyway.
This is the difference between ACER and a real brand. Rating:1 out of 5 stars Bought this netbook and had hard drive issues within a month. Paid 50 bucks to ship it to get fixed by acer. 1 month later my lcd connection is bad and flickers constantly. Acer refuses to cover the shipping. Do not buy anything from ACER. Pay a little extra and get a Dell or HP netbook and save yourself the trouble. ZERO STARS
Great little netbook Rating:4 out of 5 stars My teenage daughter has been running this for the past 6 months. Great little netbook. The wireless range is truly amazing, about 3x my Dell laptop to an 802.11 b/g WAP. She’s using it for homework but really for her it’s a multimedia gadget for social networking, playing music, Youtube videos, online games, etc. Surprisingly, she has not killed it yet. So I give it high marks for ruggedness, software robustness, and usability.
DO NOT BUY! Has manufacturing issues! Rating:1 out of 5 stars These are made terribly. After two weeks there were issues with the hardware. With the modem, with the power, a short in the speakers, HD and Motherboard communication issues. I is has been “repaired” three times and we have been able to use it 6 weeks out of the four months we have owed. Just don’t buy it bad product with bad customer service.
Perfect for my elder father Rating:5 out of 5 stars I bought this as a gift for my father who is an elder man. He has a desktop upstairs but sometimes going up there is like a chore for him. With the Acer Aspire One he keeps it in his living room and pulls it out in the evening on the sofa or might load it up while drinking his morning coffee in the kitchen. It is a perfect size for a portable computer. He loves that is has XP, he is used to using the OS. The keys are a little tricky for him but he uses a USB mouse for more accuracy than fidgeting with the mouse pad. Appearance wise it is very beautiful. I have used it a few times when he is out of town and it loads quickly and I am able to surf without much wait at all. It also shuts down quickly. This is a great starter netbook or a great computer to have as an extra. Once you shut your main computer down for the night and need to login in to just check something this is the gadget to do so. I have owned an Acer in the past as has my father so the name is well trusted within the family too. The perfect netbook in my opinion.
perfect, light, cheap Rating:5 out of 5 stars Previously, I purchased and returned a netbook from a major manufacturer, hated it slow and always crashing. I love this netbook, cheap, works well and I prefer the 3 hour battery. The larger battery adds more weight, and even in airports, I’m never far from a recharge. It’s easy to carry around. I bought one for my sister, too.
Acer netbooks horrible products Rating:1 out of 5 stars I would not recommend any Acer product to anybody. I purchased a Acer Aspire One AOD250 netbook and after a few weeks the headphone jack stopped working. Had to ship to service center at my own shipping expense. When I finally got it back a month later the touch pad would not work. Have to ship back to service center again. Acer will not replace or refund, even though the product is a lemon.
Aspire= trying but missing the mark Rating:3 out of 5 stars I think it is kinda truth in advertising that they named this netbook “aspire” because it sorely misses the mark in two important areas. 1) The wireless modem is just terrible. I don’t know what it is.. it is SLOW and unrealable.. have to keep attempting web page loads at times.. I am in the same room with my wireless modem and it still hangs, stalls.. When I plug the land line in everything is fine, so it isn’t the computer.. it’s the wireless modem. 2) The speakers are a damn joke. the volume on this is SO low that you have to use headphones.. Why bother putting speakers in? I can not understand how this can not be loud enough so that you can watch a movie in a quiet empty hotel room.. But.. you get what you pay for so I guess that I am happy with it despite these shortcomings..
Great netbook – highly recommended. Rating:5 out of 5 stars I wanted a netbook for almost a year, but I kept hesitating to get one due to the price, and in the early days, the tiny hard drives. I didn’t need it for school or business, I just wanted it for fun, so it was kind of an expensive indulgence that I was having a hard time justifying.
I found this one for under $300 and decided to go for it. I haven’t regretted it a day since. In fact, though I initially thought the netbook would just receive “once in awhile” use, I love it so much it has become my main computer, I use it for everything, and I take it with me every where I go (in a padded sleeve, in my purse). It’s almost as powerful as, and has almost as big a hard drive as, my former main computer (a 2 1/2 year old Toshiba laptop).
Due to the much larger hard drive, I was able to load several programs onto it that I didn’t originally plan to have on the netbook, and everything works fine (without a memory upgrade). I don’t run any high intensity games, so I can’t say how they would do, but I have photo editing software on it, and Audacity (free recording software) with which I record for [...] (volunteers recording public domain texts to make audio books available for free online), and both of them work fine.
I type for a living, so a wonky keyboard would have driven me nuts. This is a very nice-sized keyboard. I have no problem typing on it at speed.
The screen is very nice. As others mentioned, it’s pretty glossy, but I’ve had no issue with it; the only time it is a problem at all is when I’m outside with the netbook in bright sunlight, but just changing the angle works fine. The only issue I’ve had with the screen is due to it’s small resolution, occasionally I run onto a pop-up dialogue box in a program or on a website that I can’t quite see all of, but there’s no scroll bar. It is a mild inconvenience, but this has only happened a couple times (and I use the netbook extensively, daily), and it hasn’t yet been anything that’s caused any real problem … and I knew when I bought it that it was – obviously – going to have a small screen. That was the point of getting a netbook, it’s small size. (And there may well be a workaround for that, I just haven’t tried to find out because it hasn’t been a big deal).
The touchpad has worked fine for me. The battery life is extremely good – when fully charged, it actually has just over 4 hours of juice. I did some research, and read that this type of battery doesn’t suffer from that memory loss problem if you charge it without running it clear down first, but what will damage it over time is over-charging it. So I never leave the netbook plugged in when I’m not using it. I plug it in to charge it when the battery gets low, and make sure I unplug it as soon as I can after it reaches full charge. It charges very fast, and so far the battery life has been great. (I’ve had it about a month)
If something happened to this one, I’d replace it with an identical model in a heartbeat. I’d recommend it to my friends. In fact, a friend of mine had one first, and loves it, which is partly what convinced me to buy this one.
One last thing, and what prompted me to come write this review today. Last night I knocked over an entire glass of rum and ginger ale right on top of the keyboard and all over the screen. I mean, I saturated the thing. “Panic” doesn’t even cover it. I immediately grabbed the netbook and turned it upside down, powered it down, and pulled the battery, then left it sitting upside down for awhile before cleaning it up and putting it back together. I also left it open overnight. I thought for sure it was a goner, and was truly heartbroken, but today – everything works fine! A few keys are a wee bit sticky now, but it’s barely noticeable, and that’s really the very least of my concerns. Of course, I would not recommend making a habit of keeping beverages sitting anywhere near it or testing this theory (you can bet I learned my lesson!), but I was very impressed with it’s durability.
Overall – a great netbook at a great price. I am extremely happy with it.
Perfect, just remember notebook are not speedy Rating:4 out of 5 stars I am not using my Acer as my everyday computer, since my eyes might get tired by the small screen. However, it’s been perfect for my traveling needs, so light-weighted and compact in my purse or backpack. Great for that purpose! Long lasting battery also.
great buy Rating:4 out of 5 stars This is a great little netbook. I have one and use it for meetings, catching up on emails, etc. I just bought one for my daughter who travels internationally – great for traveling.
Un happy Rating:1 out of 5 stars The mini computer is OK, BUT Acer’s customer service does not care about there customers. Maybe because their product is purchased from a retailer there don’t feel a need to work with or help the comsumer. I have purcased several Acer products in the past, but I will never purchase another.
No disappointments Rating:4 out of 5 stars This netbook has the best keyboard of all models I could find to try out in local stores (before buying on Amazon), and an especially good-looking metallic blue exterior. The 3-cell battery means you’re trading battery life for lighter weight, and I’m happy with that. The screen is too reflective, though, almost mirror-like. I’m looking for a non-reflective screen cover.
Acer Netbook Rating:5 out of 5 stars Haven’t used this a lot but I love it. Did buy a cheap mouse for it and that makes it easier. The screen is a perfect size and it is easy to use.
Netbook for my wife Rating:3 out of 5 stars This was a present for my wife and she hasn’t used it yet. I find that it’s too small for my taste but it does seem to work OK and it did come with XP which , in my mind, is still better than VISTA or 7.
I’m sure she’ll get around to using it in the kitchen as she had planned.
