I have read a lot reviews on all kinds of all-in-one printers before I desided to buy this one. And it really doesn’t disappointed me. It does what it says. Good for print(regular paper print and photo print),copy and scan. It ’s really easy to set up. only takes about 20 minutes. I think every one who can read english or spannish and be able to use a computer can set it up easily by himself/herself. Also easy to use, and with good output quality. I love this printer. But don’t forget to buy a usb cable when you buy this one, as it’s not included in the package.

So expensive to use I gave it away after 2 months
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer 2 months ago. If you use it in a home with moderate use the cost per page just shocked me. I thought maybe the included cartridges were not full versions so I ought a set of xtra capacity cartridges. The same thing and I was doing most of my printing on draft. I learned from past experiences that if one buys a printer with high consumables it is best to cut your losses early. a 100.00 mistake.

    Shuts itself off
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
At first, I liked this printer for the most part, well, about as much I’m capable of liking any of the current crop of printers. However, mine has developed a bizarre habit: it will shut itself off at random times, including in the middle of printing a page. Another thing, and this is probably true of most inkjet printers; it’s noisy, and makes a lot of racket when you first turn it on. I can turn it on, go get a cup of coffee, come back and the printer is still whizzing, whirring, and clacking.

Print quality is good, and I’ve had zero problems with the sheet feeder.

Bottom line is I can’t recommend a printer that is shutting itself off randomly.

I bought this as a replacement for another Cannon bubble jet printer. This one is quite an upgrade over the previous one; although I have only bought Cannon printers for several years now. The photo print quality is quite good. Prints fast and quietly. Set up was a breeze. Only took a few minutes.

Bad Experience with my First Canon Printer
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I rarely review products I purchase on the Internet, but given the problems I’ve had from the MP490 I felt I had to share my experience. I ran across what I thought was a great deal ([...] w/ free shipping) for an all-in-one printer. I knew for that kind of cash it wouldn’t be top notch, but respecting the Canon brand I went for it. From day one, this printer fed multiple pages on nearly every print job. It would print 1/4 to 1/3 of a page, then stop and grab another sheet to print the rest of the document or photo. I tried different paper, ran the roller cleaning procedure multiple times, power cycling, etc to no avail. I didn’t open the printer immediately after buying it on Amazon.com (who resells it for [...]) so by the time I realized it was defective it was past the 30-day return period for either company. So…I contacted Canon support and was advised that the only thing they could do would be to ship me a refurbished replacement (for a 30-day old printer that was barely used!). So after wasting an entire black ink cartridge (which by the way this printer DEVOURS ink compared to my two prior HP Deskjet printers) and half a ream of paper, I’m going to be stuck with a refurbished printer. Also, this printer is VERY noisy and cheaply made. Overall, I would advise going for the $80 price range in printers as a minimum…and I’ve had better luck with HP printers which is what I will go back to.

    A Great All-in-one printer

My old Canon printer was on its last legs, and I decided I wanted an all-in-one to replace it. Since the computer to which it would be linked used system 10.3.9, the replacement needed to support this system along with the most recent system, Snow Leopard. I checked out Amazon and found this one on sale for $49.00, shipping included. I immediately ordered it, and it arrived a week early! I loaded the included software, and because the system was older, the printer worked immediately with my eMac. The software even puts a widgit on the dock so you can easily access ink levels and Canon software. I like going from six ink tanks to two, and I found a replacement set of 3 xl ink tanks at Costco for $55.00. The scanner and copier each due a fine job. The printer works well. I purchased a new HP multifunction printer for my newer iMac back in December, and I must say, I do like the Canon better, athough I am more familiar with the format.

I’ve only had this for a short time, but so far I am very pleased. I use it with a MAC Mini desktop. I had one paper jam from feeding too much paper and the Canon help line guided me through the simple steps of getting the paper unjammed. Unlike my previous HP all-in-one, you don’t have to remove a back panel and pull the paper out backward to prevent damaging the rollers. The negatives I have are that the top panel seems a little flimsy, and that this model doesn’t include a fax option. Instead it has a photo print feature that I haven’t used yet. I’m not sure whether the software includes an ink level indicator like the HP had. (I had to replace the HP because the feed mechanism stopped feeding paper, although the gears turned and the rollers were clean.) I chose Canon as a replacement because of the favorable reviews of a similar Canon Pixma all-in-one model (which had the fax feature — I didn’t need the fax feature) whose holiday sale price was slightly higher.

This is amazing, especially the scanner. I have an old scanner that is soon going in the trash as it is so slow. I have no complaints about this product. I am especially pleased that it can be closed up to prevent dust accumulation and then can be used as an extra work surface.

Easily the best all in one printer I’ve had, great photo quality. Prints very fast document copies when not going through the computer, slower when scanning w/ the computer. Sometimes I have to search for what the printer wants me to ask it to do. Is easily better than any of my Lexmark, and truly superior to the ESP3 Kodak, had alot of problems with that, sent it back, had it repaired, wasn’t right, had to tell Kodak what was wrong, they sent me a part, it finally worked, kinda sorta. I took a hammer to it, very very satisfying feeling.

    Excellent bargain
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this older model Canon Pixma to replace a 5 1/2 yr old Dell (Lexmark) printer. It was an excellent bargain at $45 (including tax and shipping) on an Amazon special sale.

I had a choice of purchasing new cartridges for the old Dell–which was not working well, and paying $50 plus tax and shipping, or getting this older Canon inkjet. I saved money and got an excellent printer to boot!

This Canon prints like a charm! I now actually have straight printing fonts on my resumes, excellent print set-up options, decent on/off and other printer management options. What a tremendous difference from the clumsy, poor-printing Dell (Lexmark).

Noisy, yes, as many others have said, but I’m used to it as the Dell was the same. You can, however, eliminate the big clunk-down noise by manually lowering the front paper tray before beginning to print. (The printer does it automatically.)

Ink cost, I don’t know as I haven’t needed replacement cartridges yet.

I can say the print quality is very nice, including color prints for documents; very much detail and color accuracy which never came close with the Dell. Photos not attempted yet.

It is compact in size so fits on the desk neatly, and the design is pleasing to look at. (Fyi for Canon: just wish the rear paper holder was enclosed instead of gaping open. I manually add and remove paper, keeping the compartment closed when not in use, to save space and keep the dust out.)

I wish I bought this years ago. If I had the money, I would buy the newest model Pixma ink-jet that is wifi and fax capable, and, hopefully, with cost-saving ink replacement.

All the best to you this coming year.

I paid $50 for this printer and it does exactly what I expected. Prints aren’t super fast but for an occasional print, it does great. I’ve printed a couple of photo’s and was happy with the result. Makes a bit of noise while printing but for $50, I’m not complaining.

    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I gave the “Canon PIXMA MP490 Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3745B002)” one star because it was crap right out of the box. I got a paper jam notice as soon as you plugged it in. Yes, I checked to see if any of the plastic strips that keep everything from moving in shipping were removed and I did all I could figure out on doing to get the false paper jam resloved but no go. I finally realized the dang thing was broken out of the box. Now I am requesting a refund. I will advise back what the resolution was with Buy.com.

PS: I bought this because Windows 7 made my old scanner and printer obsolete. This printer seemed campatible to my Windows 7 but could not print anything to see the end results.

UPDATE: Buy.com sent me a return label and I sent this back via UPS.

    Too new for OEM-compatible ink…..
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I own the Pixma MP620 and like it, so when my daughter wanted an inexpensive printer I was favorably disposed to the MP490. Part of what I’ve liked about the 620 is that there are inexpensive OEM compatible cartridges that seem to work fine. The MP490 at this point requires Canon ink so that takes a bit of luster off the low price. That said, my daughter reports that she and her roommate really like the printer, though they wish it had wireless networking.

    So far a happy camper…….

I bought this printer on Dec. 24th thru Amazon via [...] the actual seller. The list price was $[...] + CA tax ($3.50) so I jumped on it after already returning an Epson Stylus NX415 back to my local Staples (their sale price of $69.99) the day before because it just wouldn’t print in color for whatever reason but otherwise every other function worked great. And this was after researching many printer brands and models and reading reviews etc…for days. I could careless about having the fax and wireless aspect so this Canon MP490 seemed that it should do the job for me similar to the Epson printer I returned. Note, I already had the USB cable from my old tired Epson printer that was hard to get ink cartridges because of its old model age.

Anyway, after putting this Canon printer in the cart I later checked out the [...] website out of curiosity and they were temporarily out of stock. Jeez, now what are my options and how long to get this all-in-one-printer if it is not in stock? Also I noticed that Office Depot had it down from $49.99 to $39.99 the day after Xmas for that week until the end of the year. So I e-mailed Amazon with my question and they got back almost immediately telling me they would on pass my e-mail to [...]. I did this on Dec. 26th and the next day [...] responded back and said they would check out the warehouse availability and get back to me. That same day [...] e-mailed me again and said I would get a $10.00 refund because they pride themselves in customer satisfaction hence the refund. Then on the morning of Monday Dec. 28th another e-mailed arrived from both Amazon and Buy saying the printer would ship that day and [...] would respond with another e-mail when it actually was shipped via FedEx. So far this all sounds great but thinking it would probably be delivered in the 3-5 days standard shipping and wondering would it still be the same price or what?

I went and had a Tuesday Dec. 27th morning surf session and when I got home around noon the printer was at my door step to my shock. Set it up in an hour or so and put it thru all the scan, print and copy tests and it works great. I haven’t tried a photo yet but I have a feeling that will work out fine too. So basically I got the printer for $33.49 with the $10 refund. Yes it is a little noisy and takes a bit to warm up, but then it spits out copies in my opinion pretty fast. The scan works really good and as good as the $200 scanner only we have at my work. A photo has yet been tried but should take longer I am sure. I only need the scan, print and copy modes for pdfs, word.docs, internet printouts and AutoCAD printouts. Also I think esthetically this printer is very nice looking and doesn’t seem to flimsy like some.

I know this is all a bit long winded but the moral of the story is I am always somewhat skeptical and cynical on how the system works but have to say both Amazon.com and [...] came thru with flying colors. Especially […’. Since I had spent so much time researching and got a lemon Epson I was thinking this ain’t going all that well with the time and hassle dealing with electronics which can be a black hole sometimes.

Now I hope I haven’t jinxed myself by writing this review and the damn thing craps out on me in the next week or so. But at $33.49…..well Merry Christmas! I feel like I was “Born Under A Good Sign” on this deal and bottom line I was just inquiring about availability and questioning my options. Another note to all the people complaining about ink cartridge prices, all of these printers ink cost are high regardless of printer but some are a bit more reasonable.

Regardless of the great price I got I really think I made the correct decision buying this particular Canon printer for my home needs. Also I have noticed the price on this Canon model after the holidays has really gone back up close to its original retail of $99.99 at most outlets. In closing, yes I am a happy “surfer” and hope this thing works out in the long run. :-) )

Although this is a good printer, I would never buy one with all the colors in the same cartridge. It is very expensive if you do much color printing. Much more expensive than when I owned a Epson with 4 separate cartridges and I could replace only the one that was low. Other than that the quality is good for a home printer.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer on New Year day when my wife asked for a scanner to scan all her music sheets. So, I took out my iPhone and search Amazon for an all-in-one printer. This printer popped out with a price that can’t be beat. It was sold for $49 and with free shipping, it was a steal. I received this printer 5 days after.

The printer has great features. The printing is relatively easy and the quality is excellent. I tried scanning a page with colorful pictures yesterday and the scanned image is 100% than my old scanner.

For its size, I would not say this is a “small footprint” product. You do need a space to place this printer. Since we don’t use desktop (we have 6 laptops at home), finding a place for this printer is a problem. Since we don’t print much anyway, I guess we just need to hide it in a closet and take it out only when we need it. I’m just curious why Canon would leave out the USB cable. The cable is relatively cheap – why not just include it instead of having consumers go hunt for a cable.

LOVE THIS PRINTER, IT’s AN EXCEPTIONAL VALUE
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is an exceptionally nice printer for the price. It looks sleek and modern, and has a beautiful shiny finish on it. It definitely complements my computer area, plus it’s small enough not to take up much space. Everything goes inside of it when not in use, for an attractive, sleek, dust free printer on your desk.

Prior to this I had a Lexmark all in one printer with a phone and fax that I never used. Besides the ridiculous price for there ink cartridges, it worked Ok for the first year and a half or so. Than it seemed I had constant problems with it. So I decided to look for another printer. I was prepared to spend extra for a good home use printer. I checked all the printer revues on Amazon and anywhere I could find them on the web. I kept coming back to this printer. The reviews where great, it looked great and it had everything I wanted in a printer. Plus the price was less than 1/2 of what I was willing to spend. You can check out Walmart on line. I did and found it was a better deal, plus free shipping to there store. NOTE!!! There stores don’t carry it, only online.

Setting it up was easy, I first deleted everything Lexmark on my PC. Unplugged the USB cable from the Lexmark printer and plugged it into the Cannon printer. Than plugged the Cannon power cord into a wall outlet. I then put the disc in that I got with the printer and down loaded everything Cannon into my PC. That’s all there was to it, it was ready to go. There is some fine tuning you can do, such as paper size and type, print quality, etc, etc it pretty much guides you through every thing.

I have only had this printer for about 4 weeks now, and I’m still learning the more advanced features. But all the basics work just fine so far. The color pictures come out crisp and clear, by scanning or from my PC. The B&W documents come out as clear as can be. I don’t find it much of a problem but some people might, when you first start the printer it takes a little while to warm up. Plus it is a bit noisy while doing so. But all and all I think this is a great printer, and I am extremely happy that I bought it.

Well packaged and upon opening was surprised in that the printer is attractive too. Easy to set up.

Only one day of operation but I am impressed with its overall quality and ease of operation. I replaced an Epson cx4600 with it. I had a lot of ink issues with the Epson, always having to clean the heads if I did not use it each day. I’ll update this review in a month or so to give my impressions then – as a side note, the other Canon printer I have does not exhibit this phenomenon. So far very pleased with it and the price which almost doubled within a day after getting it.

As to size, it is roughly the same as my old all-in-one (the cx4600). I think it is compact and quite functional. Don’t see how it could be much smaller. I use a wood TV tray table next to my desk for it’s stand – handy, accessible and not too cluttering.

I have found over the years that an all-in-one printer was the best addition to my office – no more running out to get a copy or to get docs. scanned. This one is definitely a step up from my last.

19 Feb 10 – Now after using this printer for over a month I would still give it 5 stars. No problem with printing after not using the printer for several days, a big issue on my last Epson printer. It prints and scans fairly fast with good quality output.

    Very pleased with it.

I researched printers for a long time before choosing this one. I was looking for a reasonably priced printer that got consistently good reviews and realized that they were few and far between. I finally decided on the Canon MP490 after reading a lot of encouraging feedback.

The printer arrived super fast (within 24 hours)which was a real surprise because I had selected two day shipping with Amazon Prime. That alone is amazing!

Set up couldn’t have been any easier. Upon completion I scanned two photos that are approximately 90 years old and couldn’t be happier with the results….absolutely flawless!

While some have complained about the speed and the noise I find neither to be problematic.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive, quality printer I wouldn’t hesitate to order this one. Really a great value for the price.

Considering the low price of this all-in-one printer, I was amazed by its features and ease of use. The print quality is on par with any other inkjet printer that I’ve used, and it’s speed is better than most. Copying documents couldn’t be easier, and photos are a snap. I purchased the 490 to replace my Pixma 480 that had a paper jam and would not clear. I found it cheaper to buy a new printer instead of having it repaired. Says something about our throw away society. I have found the printer to be very fast after it had warmed up. The photo quality is good but not like the higher end ones. I was disappointed in the ink cartridges being changed from the 480 as it was supposed to be their upgrade over the 480. The cartridges from my 480 will not fit and I was very disappointed in this. Another way to force you to buy the new cartridges.

We haven’t used this printer much yet, so I can not attest to it’s long term reliability or performance. We haven’t even had cause to use all of its features. But after a month of very light use, it hasn’t given us any reason to regret the purchase. It’s run smoothly ever since hooking it up and installed the software. We’re still just dumbfounded at the price. It was $45 when we ordered from Amazon, but even at the current, higher price, it has to be one of the best values we’ve seen. I know I’ve paid a lot more for basic printers that weren’t nearly as feature-rich, lavish, or attractive.

The printer is larger than it appears in the picture, but it’s not too big for your desk. It’s design targets personal, home applications, rather than business doing high volume printing; and that was just what we were looking for. When we placed the order, it was also about the cheapest printer on Amazon. So, you can imagine our surprise when we opened the box to discover that not only did we purchase a full-featured printer, but it’s also a scanner, color copier, and fax machine. You definately get a lot for the money.

It scans fast and neat, besides the daily record-keeping works, I’m processing all old photos and save them electronically.
