Everything the HP Photosmart Premium Fax should have been
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had been an HP printer guy for many years, scanner died on old Photosmart, bought the HP Photosmart Premium Fax (for TWICE the price of this MX860), BIG mistake. Printer was noisy, jammed, no software for Mac……

This MX860 is a dream of a printer! Quiet, smooth, great output. Paper feed on the rear allows photo paper to be loaded all the time. It knows photo paper is loaded, just print telling software you are using photo paper, printer knows where to load it from. You don’t have to tell the software to use the rear feed, it jut knows. Printer starts printing pretty slowly, but that is not a big deal to me.

The Mac CD did not support Snow Leopard, had to download drivers and software. Canon could do a MUCH better job at detailing exactly what files and what sequence to install them, but after I figured that out no problems.

This printer is great, ink packs, at least at Costco, are $10 less for the combo pack than the HP inks, and the Costco price (at least right now) is only $129.

Can’t Beat This Printer For This Price Range
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
First let me say I bought this printer locally because I got a really good deal. When my Canon MP780 started giving me trouble I took it to my repairman. He gave it back and told me it was time to replace it. I have always trusted his judgment, he has been in the printer repair business for over 20 years and he recommended the MP780 when my HP printer gave up the ghost and I have never regretted it, so I asked him what to get. He said this printer was the best on the market for the money. He said the lesser MP560 was good but for the little extra the MX860 was the better choice.

I have only had it a few days but so far I am very impressed. One other review said it was not very good on ink but I have printed 20 top quality 4X6 pictures and half a dozen high quality 8 1/2X12 pictures and the ink volume indicators are still at the top for all colors so I think at this time I disagree. I was very impressed with the picture quality. I have maintained a separate printer for pictures, but after printing the 30 plus pictures on this printer I donated my picture printer to the church.

I did find the setup instructions in the user’s manual to be difficult to follow. They have you jumping through hoops going to different sections depending on the type of connection you are using, the type of computer, (PC or Mac), and what operating system, but once I figured everything out it went just fine. I tried putting the printer against a wall on the opposite side of the office from my router and the wireless connection was terrible. It may be some interference in the office rather than a problem with the printer. Anyway: When I moved it to a location closer to the router and not against a wall it worked fine.

To sum up, I am very pleased with my selection and my repairman has always steered me in the right direction in the past, so I have every reason to believe I will still feel this way a year or two from today

I bought this computer from a large warehouse store and thought it was to good to be true. It’s GREAT! It was inexpensive. The ink costs less than my old printer. Great copies. Great scans. A wonderful fax. An awesome wireless network (and I had no problems setting it up). It’s great because we have 3 laptops and none of them have to be connected to the printer by a cable. We can be anywhere in the house and print from any computer.

I would highly recommend this printer and am thinking about buying another for a gift for my mom.

Great Printer at a Reasonable Price
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this printer before the holiday and I must say, I really like it. I have owned HP and Epson printers before, so this is my first Canon. I love the wireless features and it was easy to setup. I like the scanning feature that allows me to send the file to any printer I have online and it just drops the file on my desktop. The only drawback I have found is the scanning quality. When I use the supplied S/W, it will not let me scan at a higher dpi. Could be an oversight on my part, but I looked at the settings and I don’t see where I can change it. I have not tested the duplex function either. Some of the reviews say that it is slow, but duplex printing is always slow. Overall, I am impressed with this printer. The ink prices seem reasonable and I like that it is not a tricolor cartridge.

Formerly owned HP 7100 series all-in-one but the print heads went out. I wanted to try a different company because of the print head situation.

We use the cannon all-in-one for home business and a bit of personal use. We also own a deskjet HP 6122 but needed an all-in-one. After tons of research, I thought Cannon would be the best bet. I was drawn to reports of its quietness and balance of features and price.

    Pros:

    *price

    *very quiet

*when the printing actually starts, it’s quick

    *not that tall

    *feels sturdy

*all the features one needs in an all-in-one printer/fax/scanner

*easy set up once out of packaging, but expect a lot of time to remove all the foam and tie-downs. It’s worse than a children’s toy in terms of straps to remove, etc. Just when you think you got all the foam and wrap, the on-line screen tells you to remove more!

    Cons:

Takes a long time to boot — longer than our older HP7100 all in one. I counted 40 seconds. This doesn’t seem like long, but when you’ve printed an invoice and need to run out the door, it’s forever. Our backup HP 6122 doesn’t have to boot up, but it’s not an all-in-one.

Print: I usually print on draft mode to save ink. The computer often changes this even it I change it to default that way, before I know it, it’s printing in regular mode again and drinking ink.

Draft mode is very light and a poorer quality than the 7100 HP.

    Photos:

I printed photos on high photo quality and saw a bunch of graininess. Again, our back up HP 6122 prints better photos. I do not recommend this to replace your photo printer.

Control center: Again, expect a 40 second wait time (or longer) if you want to make a copy. Changing the copy setting to 115% took a while — not user friendly.

Paper tray: OMG! It’s very sensitive. I had to reload the paper three times before it would accept that there was paper in there. It has to be 100% perfectly placed and pushed forward. Both my HP’s are better in this area.

Also, I changed out the paper to photo paper and had a heck of a time printing photos. It kept saying I needed to load paper. I finally noticed that it wanted me to use the auxillary manual feed for photo printing. I kept selecting the main tray, not the other tray, but the computer kept changing my requests because I selected “photo” paper. I simply wanted to use 8 1/2 x 11″ paper and print a bunch, so I didn’t want to use the auxillary tray. Besides, I would have had to pull it from the wall to access the flip down tray. Finally, I had to relent and use that tray. There was no other way around it. Again, after seeing the photo quality, I will never use this printer again for photos.

Luckily, photos are not my primary use for owning this and I have a decent photo printer. And, this is the quietest printer I’ve owned which is nice because I often work late and don’t want to wake the family.

Conclusion: I would recommend it only if you have patience and a photo printer.

Duplex printing, copying, & scanning !!!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Purchased October 2009. Excellent duplex functionality, best consumer all-in-one I have ever used. Wireless setup flawless, reliably picks up laptops in range time & time again. Did I mention the duplex auto document feeder? Consider scanning all your invoices & statements, storing them digitally, & getting rid of all that paper. An excellent buy.

    Horrible, Cumbersome, Difficult w/ Mac
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Never have I been so disappointed with a product. It took many attempts through Canon’s ‘customer service’ to get this printer to work with my Mac. I purchased this unit (which incidentally is quite cumbersome) for it’s wireless capabilities. I was told it would work with the Airport Express. I have found that to be a lie. The only way I can get it to even sputter to work is through a USB connection (after numerous attempts to get the ‘wireless’ software to work and finally giving up).

I will not purchase another product from Canon.

    Great Machine!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great all in one printer. I did have some trouble to receive fax in the beginning. I only have one phone line and my phone has answer machine function. It is actually very easy after I figure it out how to set it up. If you use your phone mainly for voice call, set it as “TEL Priority Mode” then in Reception Settings, turn on “Manual/Auto Switch”. Make sure you set up enough time for people to leave you a message before it switch to fax. The most important thing is connect your phone and answer machine directly to Canon Printer’s phone jack. This is the only way to receive fax automatic and also to identified it is a voice call or fax. Hope this will help those people who has this machine but have trouble to receive fax automatic with answer machine.

Canon quality, but it hogs ink
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This printer has a lot of features (copying, scanning, faxing, duplex printing, duplex auto-feed) for the price, but you will end up paying an arm and a leg in ink costs if you use it very often.

    Like:

    - Image and scan quality (consistent w/ Canon’s usual great performance)

    - Auto feed duplex scanning: you can easily scan or copy a stack of paper

    - Duplex printing: great paper saver

    - Dual tray loading (rear and cassette)

    Dislike:

    - Wireless setup is a major pain. They need to rework this. It is unnecessarily hard(!)

    - Ink usage, even with light use, is very high.

I’ve owned canon products for years and thought this “business” class machine would be a little more reasonable on ink usage. Our office uses a full set of ink every two months or so. This is really a deal-killer in the long term, and brings a 5-star printer down to 2 or 3 stars.

    TIME TO REDEFINE PPM
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I am now convinced that PPM should be broadly defined to include printer loading time after buying this printer. I have owned this Cannon for a few months now and it probably goes on the list of the “worst printers I have ever owned”. There are two significant issues. First, it takes an unusually long time for the printer to start printing. This is not a wireless issue, because the delay is the same if plugged-in with USB. It also doesn’t matter if I am printing 1 page or 50 pages. Even if you insert a copy job, the printer appears to have a long conversation with itself before starting the job. I haven’t timed it but I would guess the wait time for any job to start is 15-30 seconds. (If you don’t think that is a long time, any other printer would be 10 pages into the job.) Once printing, the printer speed is decent, but waiting for 1 minute for any action to start is frustrating and a waste of time.

Second big issue is with scanning multiple pages. I still cannot figure out how to make it work consistently. I get a repeated message to reload docs and push the go button. Sometimes I can get it to work, but usually I just give up.

I am also disappointed with the life span for the ink. It seems to run out much quicker than my other prior printers. The ink cartridges are small and the result is quickly running out of ink.

There are a few positives. First, it was relatively easily to connect to my wireless network. The paper door also opens automatically when it starts to print, so it saves me trips up the stairs. Also, the option to print double sided saves a lot of paper and money.

I would not recommend this printer to anyone.

  12. Ken says:

    Other Reviews are mostly correct
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
More then enough people have reviewed this printer and on 90% of those reviews I would agree fully. Read a few of those for a more detailed feature review. I only fax things once every other year so I have no opinion on that feature. The printer has the ability but it was not something I was looking for.

Only one item really warrants my comment and that’s the wireless setup. I don’t know what some people were doing but it took maybe 45 secs to connect this printer to my network. It would have been quicker but I double read the instructions before doing it. One more thing. Wireless works great. I’ve been Printing, Scanning and Copying everyday since receiving at my house and never had even the slightest issue. It’s nice to have something work like I expect from the start.

Quick side note. This might not be a photo printer but it does that well too.

If like me your on the fence about this brand of printer (I was a loyal HP guy for almost 10 years) all I can say is give it a try. I’m not sure what the longevity is going to be but at this point I’m starting to believe that this Cannon printer is going to be better then any HP printer I’ve had in the last 5 to 6 years.

Take advantage of the bargain price

My words may be too late to be of much help. The MX860 is being replaced by the MX870. With a simple search here on amazon and others, you’ll find that there are some nice deals available for the MX860. I was attracted to the lower price, but after reading through reviews from every available source, it was beginning to look that it might be wiser to wait for the new 870. There were so many who complained of a difficult setup, confusing wireless network setup, and conflicts with Windows7, that at one point I decided to forget the 860 wait for the 870. But the lower price of the 860 finally sucked me in. Almost immediately, I regretted that decision, especially after finding that “Consumer Reports” seemed to be less than overwhelmed by the 860. And one reviewer complained that the 860 would NOT copy documents that had less than a .25 inch margin. Since we regularly need to make such copies, that could be a serious problem.

If the purchase of my new 860 had not so quickly crossed over into the “shipped” category, I would have canceled the order and waited to see if the 870 might get better reviews. My order was delivered in record time, and by now I was so discouraged by my ordering, that I thought about letting the machine sit for a few days. My curiosity burned though, and I opened the box. Let me tell you this. The next step proved to be the most difficult of the setting up this 860. That was the finding and removing of all the packing tape. This 860 is our fourth or fifth Canon, so the basic setup of things like installing ink cartridges didn’t require instructions. My awareness of the problem with making the short margin copies occupied my mind. So, as soon as the cartridges were installed and accepted by the machine, I placed a document on the glass and hit “Copy”. You may be able to imagine our relief when the copy came out exactly as it should. Everything was there! Surely the remaining setup had to be downhill from here. And it was.

We have three desktops and one laptop. Two run Windows7, one WindowsXP, and the other is a Mac. I decided that my Windows7 desktop probably is my main machine, so that is where I began work. First of all, I installed nothing at all from the enclosed CD. It is still in the original envelope. You can go to the Canon website, locate the MX860 (under Office multifunction) and then click on “Drivers and Downloads”. Select your Operating System and then select just the drivers or everything that shows a mention of your OS, if you choose. On the XP machine I had to temporarily shut down my firewall, but that wasn’t necessary on the other machines. On my main computer, the Windows7, I finished downloading the drivers and was prompted to attach the printer via a USB. I did that. The software found the printer but required my entry of our password. Once that was entered, the software recognized the printer, and that was absolutely it! Done! We couldn’t believe that it could be so simple, so I held my breath as I chose to print a short document. Wow! It worked! I sat here, and the printer did its thing on the other side of a 3,000 square foot house. Once that initial setup was done with the network, none of the other computers had to be connected via USB.

Because of the different Operating Systems, the other computers required slightly different steps, but nothing that was confusing. I suppose that it might be somewhat simpler to just install the CD that comes with the printer, but there is an awful lot of stuff on there that you’ll find that you never use.

It could be that we are not discriminating enough, but we have never been unhappy with any of the results of our printing jobs with any Canon we have owned. This 860 is no different. I can’t really judge about the cost of ink. We regularly buy our ink from amazon, and it hasn’t seemed to be so bad. We cannot stress enough however, that you must resist the temptation to use the “generic” ink cartridges. We ruined one printer doing that. Never again. We use the fax only once or twice a year, so we can’t say much about that feature. And our intent in writing this review is not so much to provide you with technical details about ink droplet size or the pages per minute that are produced. Rather we hope to assure you that the 860 is a good printer that is far easier to setup and run than you might think from some reviews. And we certainly want to encourage you to consider picking up one of these MX860’s at the reduced price. From what I can conclude, if you wait for the MX870, you’ll get software that already has the drivers compatible with Windows7, and it is possible that the newer printer may warm up more quickly and begin printing. Eighty or ninety dollars more is a good bit to pay when you remember that you can so easily download the new drivers for Windows7. And so what about warm up time? Is it so tragic to wait 30 seconds or so for the machine to begin to spit out your job?

    What a Beast
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is the heaviest printer for the home that I’ve seen. Weighing in at 35 pounds it brings me back to the older days when everything was steel not plastic. Beyond being big this is an impressive all-in-one with one exception. Who told canon all the profit was in the ink. For such a large all-in-one the ink cartridges are very small and expensive. But enough of that generic vs manufactorer stuff back to the printer.

The scanner I feel is the most impressive of all. If you haven’t done it much canon has an excellent easy to use guide on your desktop. The scanner also runs very smooth and fast on both one and two sides. If scanning is your thing this is a no brainer.

The how to use guide is as good as it gets. With ease of use and explanations in a well designed help guide that area gets five stars.

The wireless set-up is easier than one would think if you follow the video tutorial on the manufacturers web site. A really nice feature that makes the wireless for all your computers in the home quick and easy.

The print speed now with all those fancy new print speed numbers is slower than I expected yet better than a lot of all in ones. It can’t compare to their high speed inkjets. If you only want a fast printout I would go with a different type of printer you’d be disappointed.

Other nice features such as memory card reader, fax machine, quality hidden paper tray ,blinking ink cartridge lights give this a 4/5 would have been 5/5 if the print speed were a bit faster and bigger ink cartridges.

  15. A. Thompson says:

Great, fast, do-it-all printer. Wireless rocks!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
So far I really like this printer. Printing wirelessly from our laptops, anywhere in the house, is a dream! I love not having to run up and down the stairs to my office several times a day. If you are considering switching to a wireless printer, do it! It is fantastic.

This printer is FAST. There is practically no delay before printing starts, and it cranks out sheets way faster than my previous printer. The quality looks good. I’ve also scanned with it and faxed with it, both went super smoothly. I wasn’t sure how hard the fax part would be, but it was as easy as just pressing fax, dialing, and hitting start.

I had problems with the printer telling me the paper I was using was too long (it was 8.5×11) during the first couple of days. I finally realized there was a bit of torn paper stuck in the mechanism, and once I cleaned it out, the printer has been fine, no problems.

One downside to this printer was that set up took a while for me. It didn’t automatically find my wireless internet like it did with some other reviewers. I had to call tech support and spent over an hour on the phone with them. But I will say that their tech support was great. Very friendly, U.S. based, very knowledgable. I think the call took longer than it should have, but once he identified the issue and input the IP info manually, it worked great.

My one big complaint about this printer is that the set-up manual is AWFUL. It has several lanaguages all mixed up on each page rather than creating different sections for each language. So you have to scan over and over through each page trying to find your language. And the font is tiny. It is really difficult to use. If you aren’t very computer savy, the diretions are kind of difficult. Someone with minimal computer skills would struggle to use it, I’m sure. Hopefully I won’t have to access it much now that the printer is set up. Canon really needs to redesign that manual.

I do recommend this printer. And as long as no problems arrise in the near future, I would say this was a great purchase. (I’ve had it about 2 months and no issues yet.)

Quality is good and reliability even better. No problem with paper feed and my ink tanks don’t show any use. I got this on one of Amazon’s sale/feature item for half the price of Cannon’s web site and it has proven to be one of the best buy’s I have made in electronics.

This is the 3rd Pixma printer we’ve purchased for our business. They are rugged, dependable printers with a lot of good features. For someone who has average or above average computer experience they are pretty easy to use, however the MX860 was purchased for someone who isn’t that comfortable with computers and doesn’t have much patience. The steps you have to take to scan, then email or print a document or picture are overwhelming for him and as a result he won’t use that feature. Also, as with all inkjet printers, the replacement ink can be a bit costly. Overall I do like this printer, though, and would buy one again.

I am pretty happy with my Canon MP830. So when my wife’s 3-year old printer started to give her trouble, like saying it was out of ink when it was not, I decided to purchase another Canon, especially a wireless like the MX860. We could both use it, and still have a spare printer available if needed. We use our printers for cards and photos, letters, tax forms, and paperwork associated with our respective volunteer activities.

The PIXMA MX860 has improved on a number of features in the MP830, one being even more convenient two-sided printing. It has improved resolution for scanning, easier access to the print head and ink replacement, convenient copying, and an independent fax capability. Having a similar machine it was easier to set up. Although not simple, we managed to configure the new PIXMA for wireless printing for my wife’s new iMac, my MacMini, and my iBook. They all allowed printing from each computer. Test printing from the three computers all came out as expected. But the next day, my spouse started getting the message “Printer Busy or Offline, Error 313.” The printer was not busy or off line. I have no idea what “Error 313″ means. I have not found what to do to correct the problem so she is out of business. She is the one who most needed a reliable printer. All I can think of doing is using the USB port to connect her computer to the printer and forget about the wireless feature. That would work but defeat the purpose we purchased the wireless printer. It would be very helpful to be able to quickly remedy such issues.

It is ironic that my MacMini and iBook continue to print with the MX860 through our Apple Extreme wireless network even though my wife cannot use her MX860.

This printer was so great and easy to use I got one for my parents. I have a wired network so I cant comment on the wireless part of the printer but it was very easy to setup unless you run windows 7 then you have to go and find all the drivers and applications. You just put the disk in and let it run it walks you through the network setup of the printer so you dont really need to know much about it. It even lets you choose to run it by DHCP it will prompt you for the mac address. With this printer I scanned in 3 years of stuff out of my file cabinet and it all fit on one cd. Plus it scans it into a searchable pdf so I can find the bill again if I need to referance it again. I love this printer I gave ink price a three because its still about 60 bucks for the inks.

returned after 2 unsuccessful hours on the phone with HP Customer Support.

The output tray is a little clunky but functional.

Photo quality and features better than the wired H/P it replaced, and it worked out of the box, without any frustration or calls to Customer Support.

I have had a Canon MX850 for a couple of years, and just bought the MX860 through Amazon for just over $100 plus shipping. I haven’t set up the MX860 yet, but I would certainly recommend the MX850. The 850 is an all-in-one unit that allows me to print and scan remotely. The print quality is very good for an ink jet, but not the high quality that one might need for business correspondence. Ease of setup and ease of use was/is excellent. There are two trays for paper: one at the bottom, one in the back. The the one on top works reliably, but the one on the bottom stopped working after about a year. The cartridges are very easy to install, and the color quality is very good; however, when trying to use it for printing photos on high quality paper the images weren’t what one would hope for, but that’s because this printer isn’t made for high-quality photos. The cartridges are somewhat small and need replacing more often than I would like. But they are completely clean and super easy to install. I prefer buying replacement cartridges from a third-party source, where the price is about 50-60% of the cost of Canon but every bit as good. If you have a light document you can increase your blackness and even improve on the original. Obviously, this will be at the expense of ink, but is worth it if you need it. Overall, this is a very good multifunction peripheral. I would rate it 90 out of 100. That’s why I bought the MX860 and expect very good results. When I install it at my home-office, I’ll be taking my MX850 to a second location.

My previous printer a Canon MP780 multifunction, that I had for 3 years would no longer print. When I looked at pricing of new print heads Approx. $75.00 I could not bring myself to fix old printer. Went to Amazon site and found this printer for $105.00 I immediately purchased it and love it. I received it before the promised delivery date and it was easy to set up and get printing in about a 1/2 hour after removing all the packing material. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone and a plus with this printer is the individual ink cartridges where you only need replace those that are empty. Canon makes a quality product and if you need a new printer try out this one I’m sure you will like it.

The Canon MX860 is a very nice looking printer and provides excellent print quality. I wasnt quite prepared for the physical size but it’s okay. The setup for USB connection was quite simple and took a short time. I am running Windows 7 and the drivers are supposed to be available on the Canon support site but I couldnt find them. The Canon support desk is only available during bankers hous so I havent been able to speak to them concerning wireless connection. Still unable to get wireless printing to work on a Windows 7 system. I tried it on a Vista system and it worked great. Very impressed with the MX860, just need help with wireless connection.

Superb printer as replacement for PIXMA MX-850
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Boy, what a nice upgrade! I am replacing a Canon PIXMA MX850 that was giving me great service until the larger black cartridge died, or should I say the Print Head. No amount of cleaning, aligning, deep cleaning, etc would make it work. The replacement head was going to be about $60, so I got the PIXMA MX-860 here at Amazon for only $130. What a nice upgrade! MUCH easier setup than the 850, especially the wireless network. It was a quick, easy setup. Print quality is excellent, duplex, fax, scan, all are as good if not better than the 850. I’m a happy camper! For the money, and with the list of features, this printer is a steal. Get one!

Oh for a Return of the English Language in Manuals!!

First off, looks like a great product: classy look, quality great, performance seems excellent. The real down side, unless you are a major “techie” OR read symbols rather than English well, is that the manual stinks! First off, they tried to put too much information into a one size fits all manual. Where or where is the Canon Printer Installation for Idiots guide?? Took me 1.5 hours to get this all assembled. The printer head assembly under a limited space on the inside is not easy. The “Press, twist and remove” instruction for removing the orange protector caps on the ink cartridges is NOT for any one with arthritic hands!! Finding the serial number one needs to be a contortionist!! If you can get beyond all of this, I’m sure you’ll love the printer!!! I haven’t tested the fax yet and do anticipate some machinations getting it connected in a way that works for me. I’ll report back on that if there are problems. For the price, its a great deal. Just want a re-do on the manual and some aspects requiring manual dexterity. I cannot imagine anyone not up to speed on technology trying to set this up.

I have always liked Canon printers, but have had trouble in the past with wireless functionality (not with Canon, just in general). I was warned by other reviews to take my time and expect that the wireless setup might be a little complicated, but I followed the instructions and had no trouble at all. (I’m using a Toshiba A505 with Windows 7 and a 64-bit platform.) Scanner, fax, and print functions have all performed beautifully. I haven’t used it long enough to comment on everything (need to see how long the ink lasts, e.g.), but have been very happy so far.

Unit was complicated to set up. Lots of tape to remove and throw away. Unit failed the first time I sent a Fax. Canon replaced it in a couple of days but they substituted a refurbished unit for the new one I purchased. My complaints went unanswered to this day. That’s not right, Canon
